Angela made her way through the jungle with difficulty. The vegetation, thick and unavoidable in some parts, nicked wire-thin cuts on her cheeks and hands. Salty sweat burned in every tiny slice and flooded her sight from time to time. A shower or some rain would be great.
The trees gradually grew more spaced out, and she paused for a few hours to break in the cool breeze and dry her irritated skin. The land was flatter, and before too long she resumed her walk and found that her speed on foot increased on the even terrain. Even though she had no idea how far she had to travel to find Udugâor exactly where she was headedâthe soul inside her pushed onward.
Angela oftentimes wondered why she was following such a vague compulsion, and she contemplated pulling Donnyâs map back out of her pocket time and time again. But she couldnât bring herself to abandon her search; Udug was on Earth, and maybe he wanted the same thing she did. That night, she slept with her back on the dirt and with the stars as her company.
The ground changed, and the air changed along with it. In the jungle, the air was thick with moisture that clung to her, but by the end of the second day, she had reached a much drier atmosphere. Only small, dying shrubs and tufts of long grass covered the dry, cracked earth. Even the creeks and small rivers she crossed had the tan color of soiled water. It was easier for her to track the time there. The days on Earth lasted a few hours longer than those on Dingir, but even though the extra time tired her for the first week, she still found the presence of warm sunlight enjoyable.
Angela traveled on, making her way toward Udug with every passing day, but she became distraught when she stepped onto the shore of the largest river she had ever seen. It was too wide for her to cross, as she couldnât justify using electricity that might save her life later, and with the weight of her gear, it would be foolish for her to swim it. Angela, recognizing the impossibility of it, regretfully changed course and turned to follow the river until she hopefully found a place to cross.
Two days later, she spotted something in the distance by the riverside. Over the tops of green shrubs, she could see buildings and small ships with furled sails near the riverâs edge.
It was a large town, by Angelaâs judgment, especially for humans. The green along the riverside continued to the edge of the town, where men were cultivating the land with hand tools and tamed animals. There were tall-shafted reeds and shorter plants of grain. The men in the fields wore next to nothing, only cloths draped about their most sensitive areas, while other people she saw around the outskirts of the town wore colored robes.
The biggest and most impressive aspect of this particular human settlement was the massive structures they had built off to the left.
